Gallery: Star Trek Conquest (PS2/Wii)
Bethesda Softworks has certainly been keeping die-hard Star Trek fans more than busy ever since they acquired the license to create games based on the classic sci-fi franchise. The fourth and latest game, Star Trek Conquest is set to hit the PlayStation 2 and Wii this fall bringing gamers a blend of turn-based strategy and challenging real time space combat.
These six initial screen shots show off some nice-looking starships and attractive space backgrounds along with what looks like one of the main maps from the tactics mode. Developer 4J Studios (Star Trek Encounters) seems to be going for a ’simpler is better’ approach in regards to the map, but based on the press release, it looks as if gameplay will be solid right from the start. Set in The Next Generation era, Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Cardassian, Dominion, and Breen races will be playable, a great thing in terms of replay value. Players will attempt to expand their empires through a little R & D with financial management and a healthy chunk of space combat added for good measure.
No details were announced on how the combat portions will play out, but if the game follows in the nacelles of last year’s well-received Star Trek Legacy, Bethsoft will have another winner in my book. Although the focus is solely on single-player (sorry, you online fiends), the game just might find an audience with fans of classic computer or table games such as Archon or Conflict. On a personal note, I’ve been intrigued with strategy games for quite some time, so it looks as if I’ll be a busy little bee once this one ships. We’ll take a closer look at what Star Trek Conquest has to offer when the game hits stores.
